Mowing Revenue and Design Revenue Come From Different Searches
A landscaping company usually contains two businesses with different economics, different sales cycles, and almost no keyword overlap. Maintenance is recurring, route-dependent, competitive on price, and won largely on convenience and proximity. Design and build is project work — patios, retaining walls, irrigation, full yard renovations — that runs into five figures, takes weeks to sell, and is decided on portfolio and trust rather than on price per visit. Ranking well for one tells you very little about whether you will get the other.
Maintenance search is short and local: lawn care near me, weekly mowing, yard cleanup. Route density is the hidden economics — a client eight minutes from an existing stop is worth substantially more than an identical client across town — which makes neighborhood-level pages unusually valuable here compared to trades where drive time barely registers.
Design and build search behaves like a home improvement purchase, because it is one. It starts visually. Someone is looking at paver patios, dry creek beds, or a solution to a slope that erodes every spring, and they are collecting images long before they collect quotes. A company whose website is a services list and a phone number is invisible during the entire phase when the preference is actually forming.
Seasonality is severe and regionally specific, and it inverts the natural marketing instinct. Spring signup happens in a narrow window, and the customer who fills your April route decided in February. Northern markets have a fall cleanup and snow contract cycle; southern markets run irrigation and heat-tolerant planting demand through months when northern crews are idle. Generic seasonal advice is close to useless here — the calendar has to match your climate zone.
There is a third stream worth naming: commercial and HOA contracts. Those are annual, they anchor a route, and they are typically won by a proposal rather than a search — but only from companies the committee can find and verify first.
This pack separates maintenance from design and build in the keyword map, gives you the visual-stage content that captures a project buyer months before the quote request, and puts the signup push in the window that fills your route.
