Fifteen Checks That Explain Most Local Ranking Gaps
Two businesses on the same street, in the same trade, with similar review counts, will often sit three positions apart in the Map Pack. Owners usually assume the gap is caused by something expensive — the website, the age of the domain, a competitor's ad budget. Far more often it is caused by four or five specific fields on a Google Business Profile that one of them filled in properly and the other did not.
That is what makes a structured profile audit worth an hour. Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage surface in local search and the one most businesses set up once, during a busy week, and never revisit. Categories get chosen in thirty seconds and never reconsidered even as the business changes. Service areas get drawn too wide. Hours drift out of date after a holiday. Photos stop at the six uploaded at launch. Every one of those is a ranking input, and every one is free to fix.
The trap in auditing your own profile is that it looks finished. The dashboard shows green, the listing appears when you search your own business name, and nothing is visibly wrong. Profile completeness in Google's sense is not the same as the profile looking complete to you — and the fields that matter most for ranking are rarely the ones the interface nags you about.
This checklist walks fifteen specific checks across five areas: category and identity, services and content, activity and engagement, reviews, and the technical foundation that connects the profile to your website. Each one is a yes or no with a defined pass condition, so the result is a score rather than an impression, and the failures point directly at the work.
Run it honestly and most businesses find between four and seven failures on a profile they considered done. The fixes are typically an afternoon of work with no cost attached, which is an unusual thing to be able to say about anything that moves local rankings.
